Hunting ban to remain; non-cooperation with Forest Department to continue

The Centre Chakhesang Youth Organization (CCYO) has announced that it will begin the second phase of its agitation on October 12, with indefinite picketing at forest offices in Phek district.

In a statement, the youth organisation said the picketing will start at 10 am at the office of the Divisional Forest Officer (DFO), Phek, the Forest Range Office, Phek, and the Forest Range Office, Pfutsero.

The CCYO General Secretary Shevoto Vezuh reiterated said the movement seeks justice, accountability, transparency and due respect for the customary rights, traditions and institutions of the Chakhesang people.

It appealed to participants and citizens to maintain peace, discipline and dignity during the agitation.

It also called on the youths of Phek and Pfutsero towns to support the movement, saying the issues concern not only the Chakhesang community but also the rights, dignity, customary practices and welfare of the people of Nagaland.

On hunting, the organisation said that with Wildlife Week concluding on October 8, the ban on hunting within the jurisdiction of Centre Chakhesang will remain in force from October 9. It said the decision was taken in accordance with the advice and guidance of the Chakhesang Public Organisation (CPO) and the Chakhesang Youth Front (CYF).

The CCYO added that its non-cooperation movement against the Forest Department will continue until its demands are addressed. This includes the continued position of non-operation and non-enforcement of the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972 in the area, according to the notification.

The organisation said it remains committed to pursuing the matter peacefully and democratically until its demands are fulfilled in full.

It appealed to all sections of society to remain united and uphold peace and public order during the movement.
